Theme: When Students Turn to AI First: Counseling Gen Z and Gen Alpha

The Counselors Connect 2026 session, held on April 12, 2026 at University of Doha for Science and Technology, explored the theme “When Students Turn to AI First: Counseling Gen Z and Gen Alpha.” The session examined the growing tendency of students to rely on AI as a “first responder” for both personal and academic concerns. While AI offers immediate support, it also creates a “slow gap,” where students struggle with real-world pacing and emotional regulation.

Discussions highlighted key digital impacts, including cognitive overload caused by constant high-speed content, difficulty adjusting to slower real-life environments, and persistent loneliness despite being constantly connected. It was noted that while students prefer AI for its instant and non-judgmental nature, it cannot replace genuine human empathy and connection.

Counselors were encouraged to reframe AI usage as a sign of student anxiety, prioritize visible empathy in interactions, and adopt a “bridge” strategy to guide students from quick digital solutions to meaningful conversations.

The event also showcased new opportunities at UDST, including programs in Animal Health/Veterinary Science and Aviation Management, industry-linked sponsorships with organizations like Qatar Airways and Ooredoo, and scholarship pathways such as the Amiri Scholarship and Education Above All.

The session concluded by reinforcing the importance of strong, empathetic relationships in supporting students in a digitally driven world.
