January 10, 2026:
Middle Section English teachers from 12 schools across Qatar participated in a hands-on Capacity Building Programme (CBP) under CBSE, focused on designing competency-based English assessments.
The three-hour workshop, led by Mrs. Nazia Saleem, equipped teachers with practical strategies to create MCQs, short- and long-answer questions, and explore diverse assessment methods aligned with CBSE learning outcomes and NEP 2020 objectives. Emphasis was placed on moving beyond rote memorization to foster comprehension, application, and critical thinking among students.
The session included dynamic activities on identifying different competencies, analyzing competency-based MCQs and free-response questions, and exploring assessment strategies beyond written tests. Teachers rotated through interactive learning stations, engaging in role-plays, oral presentations, and creative projects. These activities demonstrated multiple ways to assess student competencies, including oral, collaborative, and creative approaches.
Participants reflected on how these strategies can promote critical thinking, effective communication, and real-world language application. Through group discussions, they analyzed the competencies addressed by each activity and explored ways to implement similar approaches in their own classrooms.
The workshop highlighted the importance of assessing what students can do with language, rather than simply what they remember. The collaborative environment encouraged teachers to review, discuss, and refine assessment items, resulting in ready-to-use tools for classroom practice.
The session concluded with participants reflecting on their learning and planning to apply competency-driven strategies in their teaching. The workshop underscored Shantiniketan Indian School’s commitment to continuous professional development and the principles of NEP 2020, promoting equitable and meaningful learning for all students.
