Spreading awareness about benefits of a clean, healthy and eco-friendly environment, the Science Department of Shantiniketan Indian School, in collaboration with Gulfar Al Misnad Qatar, took an onerous task to observe World Environmental Day on its premises recently with fervour and enthusiasm.
The event also witnessed the inauguration of the Science Club by the Chief Guest Mr. Mohan Menon, Head HR, Galfar Al Misnad Qatar, in the presence of Mr. Navneetha Shetty, Head QHSE, Mr. Anwar Sadath, Head, Plant Department, Mr. K.Venkatesan, Manager, HSE, Mr. Ojelabi Olaide Olalekan, HSE Advisor and Mr. Noor Mohammad, QHSE Coordinator.
Joining hands with the UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme), the venture focussed on minimising food wastage and controlling food shortage. Keeping the slogan of the observation ‘Think, Eat, Save’ in the minds, the students demonstrated various programmes which proved to be special for all the members of the Science Club and the lovers of Science.
The programme include training presentation to the school children on “Global Warming & Need for Environment Protection” by Mr. Venkatesan, Manager, Health Safety Environment of Galfar, tree Plantation by the students, school management & Galfar Almisnad management, drawing competition for the students of class 7 to 12 on the concept ‘My Promise to the Planet’, awareness campaigning, Exhibition, Skit, Quiz, Elocution, procession etc. The events were initiated and carried out by all the wings of its National and International sections including the Montessori.
Another attraction of the day was a PowerPoint presentation, by Naveen Kelvin of Class X and Al Amin and Master Akram of class X CBSE-International, for sharing ideas on controlling resources and stopping food wastage and on environment issues.
Speaking to the audience, Mr Venkatesan inspired the children by a thought provoking speech on the significance of the day. He also made the audience aware of the threats caused by `Global Warming`. The presentation prepared by him instilled in the mind of the spectators the value of protecting our mother nature.
Dr Subhash Nair, Principal of SIS, also motivated the students with the thoughts and dream about a `clean and plastic free campus`. He urged all the students to say `No` to plastics and to bring in the green and beautiful side of Mother Nature.
The official inauguration of the science club started with the introductory speech by Mr Tono Fernandez, Coordinator, Science Club, who revealed the motto of the club `Celebrate Science` and announced the names of the office bearers . Ms Nabeela Basheer administered the Oath taking ceremony followed by the prize distribution ceremony to the winners. Parvathi Sudeep of class XII proposed the vote of thanks.
The other school officials present on the occasion were Mr. Shihabudheen Pulath, Mrs. Manju Singh, Vice Principals, section heads Mr. Dudley O Connor, Mrs. Prabha Jayaprakash, Mrs. Mehjabeen and Academic Coordinator Mrs. Prabha Saji.
