World Environment Day

June 5, 2025:

“Embrace nature to embrace life.”

The Shantiniketan Indian School is dedicated to fostering a sustainable environment by encouraging students to actively engage in teamwork and community spirit. To achieve this, various activities were conducted throughout the week as part of the World Environment Day celebrations.
These initiatives aimed to inspire students to take responsibility for the environment and recognize the importance of sustainability in protecting planet Earth for both current and future generations, thus encouraging them to become responsible stewards of nature.
The Foundational Section students actively participated in a video vlog competition titled ‘Green Today, Greener Tomorrow’, conducted for students from KG I to Grade 7. This event encouraged young minds to express their ideas and actions toward a sustainable and eco-friendly future.
In the Primary Section, Grade I students explored the stages of germination and took part in an engaging, hands-on clay moulding activity centered around Mother Nature and sustainability. Grade II students showcased a variety of activities, including:
●A role play on “Save Trees”
●Poster-making for World Environment Day
●Presentations on solar energy and hydraulic lift using working models
●A display of miniature indoor plants
The Department of Social Science organized several activities for both the Preparatory and Middle Sections of SIS.
In the Preparatory Section, the focus was on raising awareness among students about environmental issues. Hafsa of Grade 3 delivered an impactful speech emphasizing the importance of planting more trees, saving water, recycling, turning off lights when not in use, and avoiding plastic. A poster-making competition was also held, encouraging students to creatively express their concerns about pollution, conservation, and sustainable living. This activity allowed for creative expression and sparked meaningful discussions about environmental change. One of the most memorable ways students conveyed the message of conserving Mother Earth was through the creation of eco-friendly badges and placards based on the theme “Protect Our Planet.”
In the Middle Section, a green initiative featured Nature Photography, where students were encouraged to observe and appreciate the natural world by capturing photographs of nature. The photos were displayed on the “Nature Wall.” This activity aimed to develop creativity and environmental awareness through the lens of a camera. The best nature photograph- selected based on creativity, clarity, and environmental message- was awarded to Hala Aisha of Class 6B, who was felicitated by the Principal during the school assembly.
A campus-wide clean-up activity under the theme “Green Champion” was also held to promote cleanliness, teamwork, and environmental responsibility among students. The drive not only enhanced the cleanliness and appearance of the school campus but also reinforced the value of environmental stewardship. The involvement of the Scouts and Guides added leadership, structure, and inspiration, making it a collaborative and impactful event.
As part of the environmental initiative, all classes from Grades 6 to 8 participated in a 5-minute classroom clean-up activity at the end of each school day for one week. The goal was to encourage cleanliness, responsibility, and teamwork. Students worked together to pick up litter, organize desks and chairs, and tidy their classrooms under the supervision of their teachers. The cleanest class was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the academic supervisor. This activity helped students take pride in their surroundings and strengthened their sense of shared responsibility in maintaining a clean and positive learning environment.
The World Environment Day celebrations provided a valuable platform to raise awareness about environmental issues. By engaging students in creative and informative activities, the event successfully promoted a strong sense of environmental responsibility and a commitment to building a sustainable future.
